How To Make Someone Love What You Love

megaphone

How do you make someone else passionate about something you love…when they really just don’t care?

This was the fundamental question asked by Robert Scoble over at Scobleizer this week in his post entitled The Passionates vs. The Non-Passionates. I added a longish comment there, but the question has been incubating in my head for most of the week.

Scoble was talking largely about the tech-world, where there are usually a small number of early adopters who are passionate about both using and evangelizing a new “something.” And, he said, certain businesses can survive with a small, but devoted group of users.

What If There Were A Secret Internet For Kids?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

So, my friend and social media maven, Kristen Munson, has a series called Social media Dads on her blog, SocialMediaMom.com. And, she asked me to share a few thoughts on what’s it’s like to be a dad in a highly-wired (that’s connected, not frazzled) world. So, I put together a fun post that begins like this…

I’ve always had this deep desire to show my 7-year old daughter, Jesse, just how interconnected we are to others around the world. Living in NYC has made the task quite a bit easier. It seems at some point, someone from nearly every culture ends up here. And we get to meet them.

Rather Be Dead Than Disabled?

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

If you’re American, 52% of you said yes…

This was the news released in a recent survey commissioned by Disaboom.com. There’s a very insightful breakdown the numbers at WhyNotRachel.com. In fact, the wealthier you are, the more likely you are to choose death.

Much earlier in life, I might have answered the question the same way.

But, then, two things happened that changed my world and, in turn, my understanding of the issue.

Think And Grow Hair

think grow hair

A few months back, I posted about a fascinating bit of research that revealed you can literally “think” yourself stronger.

What I didn’t share was that post was just one stop in a years-long fascination with the power of the mind and, especially, the placebo effect.

I get the potential mechanism for strengthening muscles through visualized exercise, but I’ve recently stumbled upon a discovery that blew me away…

Certain people can actually think their way into stopping hair loss and regrowing hair.

No, this is not some wacky scam to sell the latest hair-growth product (mind you, the wheels are certainly spinning…Guthy-Renker, call me!).

Why My 7 Year Old Can Out-negotiate Half The Lawyers In NY

negotiating kids

So, I am driving my daughter to a friend’s house and she says something that makes me realize kids are a absolute masters in the art of marketing and persuasion.

It was all in the way she framed what she said.

“Daddy,” she shared, “ice cream got on the seat.” Until that moment, I never knew ice cream actually had the ability to do anything. Now I learn it not only has the power to be eaten, but to jump up and get onto things.

Who Else Wants To Rule The World?

world domination

I have to confess to having a soft-spot for stories and people who are driven to give of themselves in an effort to not only make their own lives come alive, but change the world along the way.

But, I am also pretty short on time, so when people ask me to read and recommend e-books, I usually take a pass. But, when The Art Of Nonconformity blogger, Chris Guillebeau, asked me to take a look at his new manifesto on world domination, I was quickly drawn in by both his very compelling personal story and his approach to life.

Every Minute Spent Complaining Is A Minute Lost Solving!

need in haystack solve

Last week, fabulous-person, entrepreneurship coach and career-blogger, Pam Slim wrote a post railing against the wave of people complaining about the economy.

Which got me thinking…

What if you actually bottled up all the time spent:

Beg, Borrow Or Steal. Did Seth Get It Wrong?

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I love Seth Godin, he always challenges my assumptions.

But, in yesterday’s post, I wonder if he got it wrong when he shared:

Only borrow money to pay for things that increase in value. It’s a short list: your business, your house and your education, mostly. Stocks if you’re smarter than me. That’s pretty much it.

I agree in theory, but not so much in practice.

The problem is, this advice works far better in hindsight than in real time.

Why Don’t All Womens’ Boutiques Have Man-Lounges?

man lounge in womes store

I mean, think about it…

I’m a guy, which means I shop for gear. I don’t shop to shop. I don’t browse. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It just isn’t my thing. Okay, to be honest…recreational shopping kills me.

I go, I buy, I leave.

And, most men I know are the same way. Not all, but most. So, any time I am asked to come along for a day of shopping or, as my grandmother used to call it “schpotzeering,” it doesn’t take long before I want to tear my hair out. Which is pretty funny, because in most any other situation, I am usually a pretty patient person.

Wake Up, The Medium IS The Message!

medium is the message

The details are not the details, they make the product” Charles Eames

Not too long ago, I was at one of those giant book marketing events and a string of speakers included some variation of the message…

“Your book is the medium, not the message.”

They recommended spending less energy on crafting your message, keeping it simple or “good enough,” then focusing the bulk of your energy on repurposing that message into as many “distribution” vehicles as possible.

“Don’t focus so much on crafting the language or making a gorgeous book,” they’d say, “just make it good enough to distribute a million different ways.” Thing is…I completely disagree with this philosophy.
