Blogging breakout: voice rules, topics drool

In June 2007, one of famed impressionist, Claude Monet’s, Water Lilies paintings sold at auction for $37.5 million USD. Last week, I painted a picture of water lilies, too. It hasn’t sold yet, but I’m quite sure it’ll go for at least a buck. Why do you care?

Because, if you blog, if you write, if you paint, if you create…anything, there will come a time where you look at what everyone else is doing, especially the leaders in your field, and wonder…

There’s been a lot of play in the blogosphere lately about how often you should post and how long your posts should be. And, even among top bloggers, there seems to be a considerable difference in opinion.

But, there are still some major lessons to be learned by comparing the posting-patterns of top niche-bloggers, during their initial launch phase, rapid growth phase and their later “mature” phase.

I’ve always been a big believer in two concepts. One, that each voice counts. And, two, that just as we benefit from the gifts of society, we are similarly beholden to give back in some way, no matter how small, no matter how immediate.

Today is the first-ever Blog Action Day, where thousands of bloggers will unite to speak on the same topic–the environment–to their individual communities and, in doing so, unite all into a single worldwide community that numbers in the millions.

Richard Branson is famous for venturing into fields where the market seems astonishingly crowded and then somehow figuring out how to serve that market in a way that is, at once, incredibly innovative, yet so “hind-sightedly” obvious it leaves everyone else scratching their heads saying, “dude, why didn’t I think of that?”
